Introduction to Penguins
Magellanic penguins are the largest of the temperate penguins,
averaging 4.0-4.7 kg in weight.
Both adults and juveniles have a black beak
Their back is black and the front is white
The head of a adult penguin is mainly black
There is a white broadband extends from the back of eyes to the lower jaw, passing the ear
Adult penguins also have two black bands beneath the neck
Magellanic penguins get their name
from Portuguese explorer Magellan,
who discovered the species in 1519
during his first voyage to South America
Magellanic penguins live mainly
in the temperate regions of South America
But during the off-breeding season,
Magellanic penguins follow ocean currents
as they migrate north into higher tropical latitudes
During the breeding season,
Magellanic penguins live on the southern coast of South America,
feeding on fish, shrimp and crustaceans
They are mainly found off the coast of South America, Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands, with a few migrating into Brazil
Their Living Environment
They now live in the Penguin Bay of Polar Aquarium
With the vast coastline,
the surging waves beating rocks on the shore
Small rocks are piled into a house,
making each penguin have their own private space
Magellanic penguins are temperate penguins,
but they have a high standard of living
They need to live in an environment
with an average temperature and water temperature
of around 18℃ to grow healthily
So Penguin Bay has its own temperature control system
to keep them comfortable
Their Daily Life
Magellanic penguins likes herring and Grilled spring fish
Every morning, the keepers clean up fresh Grilled spring fish and herring,
put them in bait buckets,
and bring them to Penguin Bay for a feast
Before the keepers come,
there is always a cute guard at the door to greet them,
and one likes to play hide-and-seek in its small house
Sometimes they go into the water in groups and swim competitively
In order to have a healthy and comfortable living environment for the lovely penguins,
the keepers will visit the Penguin Bay every day
to do 2 times of cleaning, 3 times of disinfection,
let the lovely penguins healthy and happily live in the Park
Their Health
The vets weigh them every day
Penguins are small compared to other animals,
so the disease is evident in weight changes
Weak penguins can lose a lot of weight,
so they need to weigh often
Molting is an annual ritual for penguins
Before molting, they will eat large amounts of food to build up energy
When molting, they will not eat because of the physiological changes,
the immunity of penguins will be reduced,
so they are easy to be attacked by pathogens
During this period, vets will strengthen environmental hygiene
and assist penguins who do not actively feed with small amounts of food to ensure their survival needs and maintain high immunity
