There are about 1,600 species of starfish, which are distributed in the seas of the world. They are named for their appearance like five-pointed stars. The starfish has two special powers. The first is that they’re covered in “monitors”. The starfish has tiny crystals on its skin that act like eyes, allowing it to see information from all directions at once and keep track of what’s going on around it. The second unique function of starfish is the uncanny ability to regenerate. When a starfish is injured, backup cells are activated that contain all the genes for the missing part of the body, allowing the limb to regenerate and grow into a whole starfish.
